The impressive stone arch of Thurlestone Rock, said to be derived from an ancient term "thirled stone", is a prominent feature of the South Hams coast. Erosion has left this hard core of rock standing high above the ledges that run out to sea from South Milton Sands. This beach is served by a National Trust car park and is backed by a marshy nature reserve.
