As with all of the rivers flowing out to sea on the South Hams Coast, the mouth of the River Erme is subject to constant sculpting from the tidal flow. At low water the fresh water stream meandering between wide sand and gravel beds shows the true size of this quiet river. During spring tides, at high water the river valley becomes completely flooded.
