Torcross shelters under wooded hillsides at the western end of Slapton Sands in the middle of Start Bay. Partly built on a narrow strip of land between the beach and Slapton Ley, it is sometimes pounded by heavy seas during winter storms. The village was evacuated during WWII when the area was used for practice landings for the Normandy invasion.
