Walking west from Strete, the southwest coastal path leaves the A379 and drops sharply down towards Strete Gate. As you descend on this section of the path the wide sweep of Start Bay curves away to Start Point in the distance, with Torcross nestling under the hillside between the shore of the fresh water lake of Slapton Ley and the far end of Slapton Sands.
