This private island is separated from Bigbury-on-sea by a 200-metre spit of sand that is covered by the sea at high tide. Once a hide-away for smugglers and wreckers, the island is now a popular tourist attraction. A special tractor ferries passengers to and from the island, high and dry above the waves when the beach is covered. The art-deco hotel, that looks like a stranded cruise ship was a favoured retreat of such notaries as Agatha Christie, Noel Coward and Winston Churchill.
