The River Avon drains a catchment area high up on Dartmoor with its source just north of Shipley Bridge. It flows out to sea between Bantham and Bigbury-on-sea. A passenger ferry crosses the river from the quay at Bantham and forms a vital link for the Avon Estuary Trail, an attractive hike that follows both river banks up to Aveton Gifford and back.
