Only 10 minutes walk from Salcombe, Batson, at the head of Batson Creek is a very attractive hamlet. This was the site of a Saxon settlement long before Salcombe was established. The remains of lime kilns on either side of the creek are reminders of a long lost industry. At low tide the creek practically empties leaving glistening mud flats, a rich feeding ground for gulls and other wading birds.
